Getting around

Security measures: pedestrians and cyclists may be randomly inspected at access points and inside the Christmas markets. All bulky objects (suitcases, backpacks, cargo bikes) will be searched when they enter the city center.

The Strasbourg Christmas Market will be held from November 27th from 2pm to December 27th at 9pm. The chalets will be open from 11:30am to 9pm every day except December 24th and 25th from 11:30am to 6pm. On December 25th and 26th, public holidays in Alsace, some stands may be closed, the opening being left to the discretion of the traders. The OFF Market, Place Grimeissen is open from November 27th to December 24th.

The illuminations are visible from November 27th to January 5th.

On foot

Free access for pedestrians around the clock. The central island of Strasbourg is completely pedestrianized throughout the Christmas market period.

By bicycle

Free access for cyclists around the clock.

NB: in accordance with the security measures in place, all cargo bikes will be searched when they enter the city center. Cargo bikes and delivery tricycles must have an access badge to enter the central island between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. 

To make the movements of pedestrians and cyclists easier during the festive period, preferential cycling routes have been designed. They will allow you to cross the central island and reach the main bicycle parking areas of the center by taking streets with fewer pedestrians.

Follow the two green lines marked on the ground. The first route connects the quai Saint-Nicolas to the train station via rue de la Division Leclerc, rue Sainte-Hélène and rue du 22 novembre. The other connects the quai des Bateliers to the Fonderie Bridge via rue des Sœurs, rue des Charpentiers and rue de la Fonderie.

Please note, however, that pedestrians have priority in all cases and cyclists must ride at a walking pace in pedestrian areas.

By tram or bus

All streetcar lines will operate, only the Broglie station will be closed around the clock for the duration of the Christmas Market and the Langstross Grand’Rue and Alt Winmärik stations will not be served between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Bus routes that usually go through the central island will be diverted around it.

NB: you will be asked to open bulky luggage (suitcases, large backpacks).

Our canine friends are welcome on CTS trams (excluding dogs classified as dangerous under Article L211-16 of the Rural Code). For this, they must be kept on a short leash and muzzled. Small dogs can also travel in a closed basket. Guide dogs and assistance dogs are exempt from wearing a muzzle.

By car

Getting around on the central island?

Traffic will be totally prohibited on the central island from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., except for those with special rights. Cars may enter the area away from Christmas market opening hours, i.e. from 8 p.m. to 11 a.m. 

Staying in a hotel on the Central island ?

Private parking lots of hotels can be accessed upon presentation of a parking certificate issued by the hotel.Access for a limited period of time during the guests’ stay is possible after inspection. Please contact your hotel to know more about the access procedure.

On-street parking is prohibited on the central island at all times starting November 25 at 10 p.m.

Specific measures are in place for residents with on-street parking subscriptions (zones 2 and 3) as well as for motorists and motorcyclists who have a private garage or off-street parking space on the central island.

For all other Strasbourg residents and visitors to the Christmas market

Use the park-and-ride facilities and then hop on a nearby streetcar to get to the city center:

• Ten parking lots are conveniently located on all the lines of the network. Tariff €4.20 (€4.70 at Rotonde).
• The parking lots are open 7 days a week, with exit possible 24 hours a day. You can park from 4:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. on the next day.
• With the P+R ticket, all passengers in the vehicle are entitled to a round trip, with each leg lasting up to one hour after validation, with or without a connection.

To get around on the central island, the 3-DAY PASS offered by the CTS is certainly the best deal. The ticket, valid for one traveler, allows unlimited travel on the CTS network for three consecutive days in the Strasbourg Eurometropolis. It is available on the CTS app as well as from vending machines at streetcar stations and some bus stops for €9.20 (€9.30 for the first purchase of a contactless ticket). It is the ideal ticket for occasional travelers staying a few days in the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg, especially during the Christmas market.

Citiz

CITIZ vehicles are not allowed in the entire central island during the Christmas Market season. Temporary parking spaces will be installed on the periphery of the central island to replace the spaces located on the island.
