Breadcrumb
Since a trip to the heart of the Christmas Capital requires careful planning, we've compiled here the answers to the questions most frequently asked by our visitors.
Organization & Logistics for Your Visit
The Christmas market will take place from Friday, November 27, to Thursday, December 24, 2026.
- Friday, November 27 (opening day): 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
- Every day (Monday through Sunday): 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
- Thursday, December 24 (closing day): 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Please note: All market stalls will close permanently on the evening of December 24. No stalls will be open on December 25 or through New Year’s Day.
Yes. The chalets have the same hours on Saturdays and Sundays as they do on weekdays, closing every evening at 9:00 p.m.
For a smoother experience, we recommend visiting in the morning (starting at 11:00 a.m.) or on weekdays.
Each drink is served in a returnable cup for €1, which you can get refunded or donate to a charitable cause.
You can return your cup to any stand selling drinks to get your €1 deposit back. Alternatively, you can drop it off at one of the charity collection stations located throughout the squares: your €1 deposit will then be donated directly to a Strasbourg-based charity.
There are many free public restrooms, several of which are accessible to people with disabilities, located throughout the Grande Île.
To instantly locate permanent or temporary restrooms, as well as nearby partner businesses, you can use the free “Ici Toilettes” app or refer to the official event map.
Two official information booths are set up on Place de la Gare and Place Kléber.
Hosts dressed in the colors of “Strasbourg, Christmas Capital” and carrying informational flags also walk through the streets every Wednesday and on weekends to help guide and advise you.
For security reasons, there are no temporary luggage storage facilities within the market grounds.
Large pieces of luggage can be stored at the self-service luggage storage facility at the SNCF central station or through the city’s network of partner luggage storage locations.
Directions & Parking
Park-and-ride (P+R) facilities located on the outskirts allow you to park for €4.20 per day, with a round-trip tram ticket included for all passengers.
This economical and eco-friendly option lets you avoid driving into the historic city center, which is entirely pedestrian-only during the festivities. In just a few minutes by tram, you’ll arrive right in the heart of the Christmas Capital.
Motor vehicle traffic is strictly regulated and prohibited on the Grande Île during market hours.
To ensure the safety and comfort of pedestrians, access controls are in place at the bridge entrances. We recommend walking, biking, taking public transportation, or riding the sightseeing boat to explore the light displays.
The historic center and its earliest chalets are located just a 10-minute walk from Strasbourg Central Station.
Simply follow the marked pedestrian route from the station plaza. The tram lines (particularly lines A, C, D, and F) also drop you off right near the various event venues.
During the chalets’ opening hours (11:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m.), bicycles and personal mobility devices are strictly prohibited on the market squares; visitors must walk, carrying their devices by hand, throughout the entire Grande Île.
Secure bicycle parking areas are provided near the access bridges.
Accessibility & Family
Strasbourg offers free rentals of wheelchairs and walkers, as well as accessible guided tours.
Equipment is available for loan at the information kiosk on Place Kléber (no reservation required; a valid ID must be presented). In addition, a dedicated accessibility map lists level pathways, access ramps to the kiosks, and accessible restrooms.
A quiet, heated baby and breastfeeding area is available free of charge in the heart of the festivities.
This space allows parents to change their child, warm up a meal, or breastfeed in complete comfort while out and about. Its exact location is marked on the official event map.
Square Louise Weiss (Petite France) is home to the Advent Village, a paradise for children and families.
This magical place offers daily storytelling performances, creative workshops, concerts, and interactive games—all free and open to the public—so everyone can discover the traditions of the Alsatian Advent season together.
Yes, dogs on a leash are allowed in the market aisles. However, due to the large crowds, visiting with a pet is strongly discouraged on Saturdays and Sundays. Weekday mornings are recommended for your pet’s comfort and safety.
It is possible to navigate the area with a stroller, but it can be difficult during rush hour (a baby carrier is recommended on weekends). A family area equipped for diaper changes and breastfeeding is available at the Advent Village (Square Louise Weiss) as well as at several partner locations in the city center.
Experience & Discovery
The Marché OFF is the socially responsible, eco-friendly, and locally focused alternative to the Christmas Market, located on Grimmeissen Square.
This unique market brings together organizations from the social and solidarity economy (SSE) within an original setting made of shipping containers. People come here to hunt for vintage furniture, buy ethically sourced gifts, participate in upcycling workshops, or sample local organic products.
Dogs are allowed at all Christmas markets as long as they are kept on a leash.
However, due to the very large crowds (especially on weekends), we recommend visiting in the morning or early in the week to ensure your four-legged friend’s well-being and comfort.
The Village du Partage is a historic hub of solidarity located at the foot of the Grand Sapin, on Place Kléber.
It brings together dozens of charitable, humanitarian, and social welfare organizations. Visitors can make donations, purchase handmade crafts to support worthy causes, and enjoy the traditional “Soupe de l’Étoile” prepared by renowned Alsatian chefs.
Mondays, Tuesdays, and mornings are the quietest times to stroll leisurely through the markets.
The markets are traditionally very crowded on Wednesday afternoons, Friday evenings, and throughout the weekend. Planning your visit during the week will allow you to fully enjoy the crafts and chat more easily with our vendors.
Nearly all exhibitors accept credit card payments (often contactless). Since ATMs on the Grande Île are very busy, it is still advisable to bring cash before crossing the access bridges.
