The big tree and the illuminations
Standing in the heart of the square, the Grand Sapin is one of the symbols of Strasbourg as Christmas Capital. Every year, the public follows its journey from the forests of the Vosges to Strasbourg, like a breathless soap opera! Cutting, transporting, placing on the square, decorating... everything is closely scrutinized, heralding the arrival of the eagerly-awaited annual event as early as October. At its foot, an enchanting setting allows us to immerse ourselves in a privileged setting, for the time of a dream or a pretty photo.
- Christmas culture and tradition
Standing in the heart of Place Kléber, the Grand Sapin—a powerful symbol of Strasbourg, the Christmas Capital—embodies the values of Christmas: bringing people together, inspiring wonder, and passing on traditions. This year, its decorations around the wreath reflect an authentic and community-minded Christmas, inviting the city to share in the festive spirit.
The decorations on the Grand Sapin are centered around four symbols and values: the candle for hope, the dove for peace, the Alsatian cottage for conviviality, and the heart made of Kelsch for love. Inspired by the world of Alsatian artist Dôriane, other decorations evoke nature and Alsatian Christmas tales: wooden puppets, holly branches, pinecones, and mistletoe. At the base of the tree, four doors adorned with Advent wreaths celebrate hospitality and sharing, inviting everyone to step into the magic of the holidays.
In keeping with previous years, the design of the tree and its decorations is part of an eco-friendly approach, utilizing recyclable materials and local craftsmanship: the Kelsch hearts are made by the Hélène de Cœur association, the wicker wreaths by Inclusiv C’CITE, and the wooden decorations by the Sonnenhof Foundation (workshops in Bischwiller and Reichshoffen).
The Grand Sapin is illuminated from November 26 to January 5, 2026. Experience the musical and luminous awakening of the Grand Sapin, every day and at all times between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., and without music from 10 p.m. to midnight.
