A sustainable and responsible event
For over 450 years, Strasbourg has been spreading Christmas cheer. It all begins with Chrìstkìndelsmärik, one of Europe's oldest Christmas markets, where history blends with magic.
- Christmas for everyone
From the moment you set foot in the city, you are transported: the Grand Sapin on Place Kléber, majestic and illuminated, dominates the square, while thousands of fairy lights transform the streets into an enchanting setting. Every façade and every square tells a story, a nod to the past and to Alsatian traditions.
Advent is experienced here with intensity and authenticity. The Christmas tree, first mentioned in 1492, originally took pride of place in public spaces before entering homes in the 18th century. It later inspired the famous blown glass baubles from Meisenthal, which replaced the apples traditionally used as decorations following a period of scarcity.
The smell of bredle, gingerbread and mulled wine fills the streets, inviting young and old alike to share moments of conviviality. The wreath, which appeared in the 19th century, and the Advent calendar, invented in 1903, mark the days leading up to Christmas.
These traditions bring to life the legendary Christmas characters of Alsace: Chrìstkìndel, an angel dressed in white; Saint Nicholas, protector of children; Hàns Tràpp, a figure from local tales; and Father Christmas. But Strasbourg, the Christmas capital, is not content to rest on its heritage: it also knows how to reinvent itself. Local craftsmanship, solidarity and regional expertise breathe new life into tradition.
Since March 2025, the event has been ISO 20121 certified, an international standard that recognises its responsible management. This certification highlights the initiatives put in place to reduce waste, support the local economy, strengthen solidarity and maintain constant dialogue with all stakeholders: the public, exhibitors, partners and security services.
Thanks to this approach, Strasbourg Christmas Capital offers an immersive experience, accessible to all, combining authenticity, modernity and responsible commitment.
