A sustainable and responsible event

For more than 450 years, Strasbourg has been making the magic of Christmas shine. It all begins with the Chrìstkìndelsmärik, one of Europe's oldest Christmas markets, where history meets enchantment.

  • Christmas for everyone

From the moment you set foot in the city, you’re transported: the Grand Sapin on Place Kléber, majestic and illuminated, dominates the square, while thousands of magical lights transform the streets into an enchanting scene. Every facade, every square tells a story, a nod to the past and to Alsatian traditions.

Advent is experienced here with intensity and authenticity. The Christmas tree, first mentioned as early as 1492, originally stood in public spaces before entering homes in the 18th century. It later inspired the famous blown-glass ornaments from Meisenthal, which replaced the apples traditionally used as decorations following a period of scarcity.

Bredle, gingerbread, and mulled wine fill the streets with their aroma, inviting young and old alike to share moments of togetherness. The wreath, which first appeared in the 19th century, and the Advent calendar, invented in 1903, mark the days leading up to Christmas.

In these traditions, the legendary figures of Christmas in Alsace come to life: the Chrìstkìndel, an angel dressed in white; Saint Nicholas, protector of children; Hàns Tràpp, a figure from local folktales; and Santa Claus.

But Strasbourg, the Christmas Capital, does not rest on its heritage: it also knows how to reinvent itself. Local crafts, solidarity, and regional expertise breathe new life into tradition.

Since March 2025, the event has been ISO 20121 certified, an international standard recognizing its responsible management. This certification highlights the initiatives implemented to reduce waste, support the local economy, strengthen solidarity, and maintain constant dialogue with all stakeholders: the public, exhibitors, partners, and security services.

Thanks to this approach, Strasbourg: Capital of Christmas offers an immersive experience, accessible to all, that combines authenticity, modernity, and responsible commitment.
