A bright, thoughtful and enchanting Christmas
Strasbourg, the Christmas capital, is known and recognised for the splendour of its numerous illuminations, which transform the city into a veritable showcase of light.

Subtle Lighting
Committed to balancing magic with simplicity, the City uses energy-efficient LEDs to reduce energy consumption(1), adjusts lighting schedules(2), and prioritizes reuse, repair, and the secondhand market for its decorations.
This year, Strasbourg further enhances its luminous setting with decorations that blend elegance, tradition, and sustainability. At Place de la Gare, hearts made of kelsh fabric—a symbol of Alsatian heritage—blend with luminous discs made of recycled fiber, while soft lanterns, twinkling stars, and natural decorations adorn the city from Place Broglie to the southern quays. Visible both day and night, this harmonious ensemble—complemented by the illumination of the Vauban Dam and the bridges of the Grande Île—showcases all the elegance and creativity of the Christmas Capital.
The City of Strasbourg illuminates more than 250 streets, squares, and parks—nearly 700 sites across the city. In the city center, the decorations highlight iconic locations such as Place Kléber, Quai des Bateliers, Place du Marché-aux-Poissons, and Place Saint Thomas…
In the neighborhoods, the magic of Christmas continues with 25 km of garlands and illuminated Christmas trees, offering every resident a setting of light and conviviality.
(1) Implemented since 2010, the “Plan Lumière” has replaced old light bulbs with LED systems that are more adjustable, more durable, and, above all, significantly more energy-efficient. Energy consumption for public lighting has dropped by nearly 25%, and electricity consumption for Christmas lights has been reduced by a factor of 10.
(2) This more understated, resolutely eco-friendly system is in line with the charter of the Association for the Protection of the Night Sky and the Nighttime Environment and the LUCI (Lighting Urban Community International) network. The Vitrines de Strasbourg association redoubles its efforts every year to illuminate the shopping streets with decorations, often inspired by the names of the streets, squares, or their history. It also designs decorations made from recycled plastic bottles, 3D-printed to minimize environmental impact, thus combining the magic of Christmas with ecological responsibility.
The illuminations are on display from November 21 to January 5, 2026.
