A bright, thoughtful and enchanting Christmas

Strasbourg, the Christmas capital, is known and recognised for the splendour of its numerous illuminations, which transform the city into a veritable showcase of light.

  • Christmas with a difference

Lights with a Touch of Sobriety

Committed to combining magic and moderation, the City uses low-energy LED lights to reduce electricity consumption(1), adjusts lighting schedules(2), and prioritizes reuse, repair, and second-hand markets for its decorations.

This year, Strasbourg further enhances its luminous setting with decorations that blend finesse, tradition, and sustainability. At Place de la Gare, hearts made of kelsh fabric—a symbol of Alsatian heritage—mix with luminous discs made from recycled fiber, while soft lanterns, twinkling stars, and natural ornaments adorn the city from Place Broglie to the southern quays. Visible both day and night, this harmonious ensemble, completed by the lighting of the Vauban Dam and the bridges of the Grande Île, showcases all the elegance and creativity of the Capital of Christmas.

The City of Strasbourg illuminates over 250 streets, squares, and parks—nearly 700 sites across the city. In the city center, the decorations highlight iconic places such as Place Kléber, Quai des Bateliers, Place du Marché-aux-Poissons, and Place Saint-Thomas.

In the neighborhoods, the Christmas magic continues with 25 km of garlands and illuminated trees, offering every resident a touch of light and warmth.

(1) Launched in 2010, the “Plan Lumière” has replaced old bulbs with LED systems that are more adaptable, durable, and above all, far more energy-efficient. Public lighting energy use has dropped by nearly 25%, and electricity consumption for Christmas lights has been divided by ten.

(2) This more moderate and resolutely ecological approach is part of the charter of the Association for the Protection of the Night Sky and Environment and the LUCI network (Lighting Urban Community International).

Illuminations Throughout the City

As Christmas approaches, Strasbourg adorns itself in its finest attire. Streets, houses, and monument façades shine with countless decorations, each more original than the last.

The association “Les Vitrines de Strasbourg” works tirelessly each year to light up shopping streets with decorations often inspired by the names, history, or identity of the places themselves. It also designs 3D-printed decorations made from recycled plastic bottles to minimize environmental impact—combining the magic of Christmas with ecological responsibility.

The illuminations will be visible from November 21 to January 5, 2026.
