Discover Strasbourg’s Christmas Specialties
No visit to Strasbourg, Capital of Christmas, would be complete without tasting the local traditions! Strasbourg households celebrate the season by showcasing their recipes during Advent. Here is an overview of the must-try treats and some recipes to recreate at home.
Bredle Cookies
These small cookies are essential to Alsatian Christmas. There is a wide variety of recipes, and tradition calls for preparing several different shapes and flavours. Store them in an old-fashioned metal tin to respect the custom.
Cinnamon star recipe by Philippe Volck, pastry chef at Kubler:
Ingredients for 20 Bredle Cookies:
- 500g almond powder
- 500g icing sugar
- 25g cinnamon
- 3 egg whites
Preparation:
- Mix almond powder, icing sugar, and cinnamon, then add the egg whites.
- Let rest in the fridge overnight.
- Roll out the dough to 10 mm thickness and cover with a thin layer of royal icing.
- Cut out stars with a cookie cutter and let dry for 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 170 °C and bake for about 10 minutes.

Manele and Gingerbread
Manele
These small brioche men are made for Saint Nicholas Day. They are decorated with raisins or chocolate chips to represent eyes. Perfect for delighting both children and adults.
Gingerbread
Popular since the Middle Ages, gingerbread combines honey and exotic spices. In the 19th century, it was decorated using cookie cutters or sugar motifs. A true Alsatian classic!
White Mulled Wine*
The association La Tribu des Gourmets d’Alsace shares its traditional Alsatian white mulled wine recipe. Enjoy responsibly!
Ingredients:
- 1 litre dry white wine (Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc or Riesling)
- 1 orange and ½ organic lemon
- 1 cinnamon stick and a few star anise
- 10g sugar
- 10cl water
Preparation:
- Heat the white wine over medium heat without boiling and keep the lid on to preserve the aromas.
- Add sugar and adjust according to taste and the acidity of the wine.
- Add the orange and lemon, then the cinnamon stick.
- Maintain at 70-80 °C and let infuse. Remove fruits and spices if leaving overnight.
